UNION TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS NEED NOT PAY $20.00 LICENSE TAG FEES RESCINDED BY TID September 3, l996 As a result of recent action by the Butler County Transportation Improvement District (TID) to rescind the $20 motor vehicle license tag fee, Union Township residents are being asked to carefully review mail-in registrations before renewing their vehicle registrations by mail. Since the TID Board voted August 22 to rescind the fee, mail-in registrations sent to residents prior to September 3 may still include the fee. Union Township residents are being requested to visit a local deputy registrar's office in person when renewing their registration so that the $20 fee can be deducted. Mail-in registrations which still include the fee should not be used in the State of Ohio, according to Darrell Barger, TID Director. "Local deputy registrars are able to deduct the $20 fee at the time of in-person renewal," Barger said. "However, Union Township residents cannot simply deduct $20 from mail-in registrations when renewing tags by mail. The state's computer system cannot accept payment of fees less than those stated on mail-in materials, all of which include the fee prior to September 3." It is reported that such mail-in registrations with the fee stated thereon will be rejected by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. There can be no further mail-in registrations until the forms are revised by the State of Ohio. Mail-in registrations sent to residents by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles after September 3 should not include the fee. The TID, in conjunction with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, is in the process of implementing a system to issue a refund to all Union Township residents who have previously paid the $20 fee. The TID requests that individuals not call for information on refunds. As soon as a system is in place, the public will be informed through the press. To avoid questions and potential problems with registration, residents are encouraged to visit a local registrar's office where personnel are informed of the recent recision of the fee. Local offices of deputy registrars are located at the following addresses:
Mason
Sharonville
In August, the TID Board of Directors rescinded the $20 license tag fee at the request of Union Township Trustees. The fee was replaced with Tax Increment Financing as Union Township's method of funding the local share of costs for area highway improvements. |
